William Winchester died from unspecified causes on 5th February, 1915, while serving in France but it is not known if he died from wounds or from illness, both of which took their toll of the men on the Western Front. The 4th Middlesex battalion was part of 8 Brigade, 3rd Division that had been in France since the start of the war in August, 1914. During the early months of 1915 they were in the line to the south of Ypres in Belgium.
